Catholic Schools Update: National Catholic Schools Week

This week our Catholic schools are celebrating National Catholic Schools Week. It’s a week to highlight the impact faith has in education. Students around the diocese of Reno are following themed days to share their joy with focus on family, faith, charity works, the nation, sports and more. Special Masses, assemblies and programs have been planned.

Below find a quick update from each of our schools that will be featured in the next High Desert Catholic magazine.

Bishop Manogue, Reno

Bishop Manogue is busier than ever! Enrollment for the 2024-2025 school year remains at an all-time high, and acceptance letters just hit mailboxes for incoming freshmen. As students dive into the second semester, they’re busy preparing for SATs, rehearsing for the Spring Musical, and gearing up to welcome families for our annual Grandparents and Godparents Day in March.

This year, several Bishop Manogue alumni, supporters, and mentors received well-deserved recognition at two prestigious Hall of Fame ceremonies. During the 35th annual BASH gala, Fr. Chuck Durante, Brian Sandoval, Chris Ault, and John and Yvonne Anxo were inducted into the Bishop Manogue Hall of Fame. Additionally, February marked the 2nd annual Athletic Hall of Fame, where 13 individuals and one team were honored for their achievements.

Little Flower Catholic School, Reno

Little Flower students have adapted well to the new building, and the school is utilizing its expanded space to enhance learning. Teachers value the extra room, and parents are excited about the improved facilities, which contribute to a high-quality education. The addition of a multipurpose room accommodates lunch, practice sessions, and Missoula theater performances. Robotics is now available to all students, while Kindergarten through 5th grade enjoy weekly STEM classes. The new science lab supports hands-on experiments, and Spanish is offered twice a week for younger students and daily for older ones. The renovated library provides a welcoming space for reading, and the spacious music room allows all grade levels to develop their musical skills. The updated playground with turf grass is perfect for sports like football, soccer, and tag. The school is grateful for these improvements and excited about future opportunities.

Our Lady of the Snows, Reno

Our Lady of the Snows is gearing up to break ground in August for our Welcome Home expansion project. A new ELA curriculum in grades K-4 has yielded positive results this academic year, with students working at various achievement levels making substantial gains in reading and writing. Additionally, supplemental religion materials have Snows children living their Catholic faith more deeply on a daily basis. Our leaders in the 8th grade are sitting on committees that serve our students, staff, and school around culture and community – planning for and carrying out assemblies, events, service projects, and dances as well as sharing their gifts of love and empathy with the younger classes. We look forward to what they have in store for a memorable Catholic Schools Week for our Snows community!

St. Albert the Great, Reno

St. Albert the Great Catholic School is excited to be using funds raised by our PTO to install an upgraded security camera system and a controlled door system in our gym. Through the generosity of our Knights of Columbus, the school will be purchasing and installing a high-quality sound system for our gym as well. We are very fortunate to be the winners of the Dolan Challenge, winning $25,000 to be used toward security. Our community project is the creation and distribution of Hope and Healing Bags which will fill an important need for families whose children are in the hospital for a long stay. Our students are thriving at St. Albert the Great Catholic School!

Saint Clare’s Montesorri, Lake Tahoe
This fall, Saint Clare’s opened the doors of its new Classical Upper School which serves students grades 7th through 12th. Upper School students at St. Clare’s engage in a rigorous classical academic program. The High School is part of the Chesterton Schools Network – a proven Classical Program that has already had success in over fifty schools nation-wide. This semester, students read and discussed Homer’s complete Iliad in a Socratic Literature Seminar, studied the night sky while delving into Astronomy 101, and took classes in Ancient History, Euclidian Geometry, Algebra, Theology, Art History & Studio, and Woodworking. As part of the Chesterton Schools Network, St. Clare’s shares the motto “Cultura Vitae”, the culture of life. We seek to prepare students to triumph over the materialism and despair that pervade our culture and to accept our Lord’s offer to have life, and to have it abundantly.
