After over 50 years ministering in the Diocese of Reno, Reverend John Bain has moved to AlmaVia residence in San Rafael, California.
Father Bain was born and reared in San Francisco, and was graduated from the University of San Francisco with a B.A. in history in 1964. In 1965 he entered St. Patrick’s Seminary in Menlo Park and from there studied at Newman Theological College in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Father was ordained on April 25, 1970 at St. Thomas Aquinas Cathedral by Bishop Joseph Green.
Father’s first assignment was at St. Albert the Great parish in northwest Reno, serving from 1970 to 1974. He then headed south to St. Anne’s in Las Vegas, 1974-1975, and then became pastor at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Hawthorne, 1975-1979. He was assigned as pastor at Our Lady of Tahoe, Zephyr Cove, in 1979 and ministered to locals and tourists there until his retirement in 2003.
Retirement is a poor description of Father Bain’s past 20+ years, however, as he continued serving as needed not only at the parishes in the Truckee Meadows but also throughout northern Nevada (Winnemucca was a favorite) and towns of the Eastern Sierra such as Lake Almanor, Quincy, Portola, Graeagle, Loyalton and Greenville. On frequent trips to the Bay Area, Father Bain assisted at St. Paul’s in San Francisco and St. Patrick’s in Larkspur.
We wish prayerful blessings for Father Bain and are extremely grateful for his dedication and service to the Diocese of Reno!
