Can Americans find common ground on abortion?

No

When it comes to the abortion debate, the only question really at issue is whether or not the child in the womb is alive — everything else is merely a “red herring” argument. To paraphrase one author, “if the unborn in the womb is not alive, no justification for abortion is necessary. But if it is alive, no justification is adequate.”

As such, there can be no middle ground on this argument. To make the argument clearer, imagine we were speaking of whether or not a mother should be allowed to kill her 2-month-old child; no argument — whether it be that the child was conceived in rape or incest, or whether the child suffers some handicap, or whether the mother desired to be autonomous — would justify the killing of that child. There can be no middle ground on this: Either it is the killing of an innocent or it is not.
