Is our attire a reflection of our souls?

Not Necessarily

Clothing in the ancient world was often times a symbol of a person’s identity. Certain biblical passages refer to a person’s clothing in this way. However, these are more symbolic descriptions rather than actual expressions of identity.

In our contemporary culture, a person may wear a type of uniform that identifies their function (medical professional, police officer and so forth), but what a person does is not the same as who they are in their deepest identity (soul). Material vestige can never adequately express the eternal dignity of the human soul. At best, our clothing today expresses our tastes and preferences.

The closest a person could come to claiming that attire is a reflection of their soul is when they wear a baptismal garment. In that moment, the garment is a perfect reflection of the newly cleansed soul that now shares in the resurrected life of Christ Jesus.
